Composition

This image has the glass centred in the middle of the rule of thirds to focus the viewer on the centre
I framed the image here with the circle, this is a nice effect as it shows natural beauty from an industrial point of view
I focused the swirl in the central part of the rule of thirds so all attention is drawn into the middle as it is the most important part
I used this bench as a leading line to curve round and cause mystery towards the end of the photo
I used rule of thirds to position the middle eye in the centre of a crossing line so attention is drawn to the centre
I made sure the eye was in the centre of the rule of thirds to focus the viewers attention to the most important feature
I used the bars to divide up the image, this focus' the viewers attention and breaks up the image to see them in a different way
Here I took into account depth of field, the road, the sky and the buildings are on 3 different levels to give the photo a great look

There are leading lines into the centre of the image to draw attention to the building as it is the important feature

I used the curb as a leading line to focus the attention on the end of the photo, it works well to draw the viewer in

Devonshire Green Frame

I took this photo from behind one of the sculptures in Devonshire Green. I took this photo as I like the frame that the circular cut out makes with the background. I like the way the nature in the background interacts well with the man made features next to it. I also feel the sculpture adds texture to the foreground. I feel the creativity comes here not only with the sculpture but with the contrast of nature in the background. I felt as this did not need editing due to the fact that the colours contrast with the others well naturally.

Soundhouse

I took this photo of Soundhouse in Sheffield as it demonstrates both the creativity of the musicians that work in there and also the digital aspects of the production that happens in the building. I also feel as though the building is creative itself due to the soundproofing material look on the outside. The shadow of the building on the Soundhouse shows the new and digital Sheffield coming out of the industrial shadow it had in the past. To edit this photo I used the Hue/Saturation tool to make the background much more vibrant, this puts the building in a new light and helps it stand out in contrast to the now, more colourful background.

Iron Bars

I took this photo of sheffield from behind these Bars on a bridge to capture the derelict part of sheffield within the digital and creative city. I tried to focus in on the bars and have the buildings in the background less in focus so to show the derelict and worn away part of sheffield in contrast to the new parts of the city. I wanted this photo to be taken at dawn, so to edit this, I used the curves tool to make only the background darker, then I used the hue/saturation tool to make it darker again, this makes the photo look as though it was shot in the morning.

Leading Line Devonshire Green

This is a picture of a sculpture bench in the Devonshire Quarter, I took this photo as I like the contrast between the stone and the bushes. I feel the sculpture is also creative due to its shape. I took this to demonstrate the leading line that the sculpture creates. To edit this I first selected around the sculpture and inverted the selection, then I used the Blur tool to make the sculpture more prominent. I then edited the curves to make it darker. I used the smudge tool to smooth the edges of the sculpture which made the blur effect look smoother.

City Life Landscape

This is my photo of Sheffield from a bridge near the train station. I took this because it demonstrates digital places and creative places in the area. The photo captures the 2 creative buildings, being Ventana House and Electric Works. The Digital aspects are of the Electric Works and Ventana House, as well as the Odeon cinema in the background. I also like the image as it is aesthetically pleasing because of the colour change of the sky. To edit this photo I selected the sky and altered its colour with the Hue/Saturation tool to make it more blue. I then raised the brightness and contrast to make the colours stand out more and so the buildings have a greater contrast with the sky.

Ventana House

This is my photo of Ventana house in Sheffield. It is a digital building as it is the main Sky call centre in the area, and obviously sky is one of the largest digital media distributors in the world. The building is also creative as well, being such a radical design shape. I felt as though I did not need to edit this photo as it does not need any changes to it as I like the photo as it is.

Phlegm Graffiti

This is my photo of a piece of Phlegm graffiti in Sheffield. I took this photo as it is a highly creative piece of work. I feel that the old brickwork works well with the graffiti as it gives an authentic but modern feel to the art. I did not edit this photo as the contrast that the graffiti makes with the wall is already good and the colours already stand out enough.

Graffiti Eye

This is my photo of some phlegm graffiti behind a shop called Rare and Racey. I took this photo as I like the creativity of the graffiti, especially the eye. To edit this photo I used the magic wand tool to select the eye, then use the inverse tool to select everything but the eye. I then used the Hue/Saturation tool to change the colour of the graffiti to make it brighter and more colourful. I did this to make the wall look more creative with its colours.

Devonshire Green Swirl

I took this photo of a sculpture in the Devonshire quarter as I feel it is a creative shape and has a good contrast with the foliage in the background. To edit this, I decided to take a picture of some phlegm graffiti and use the lasso tool to copy it into the photo. I then used the warp tool to merge it onto the sculpture, I then used the opacity tool to make the sculpture visible in the background

Devonshire Green Skatepark

This is my photo taken behind one of the grinding ledges at Devonshire Green skatepark. I took this photo as I liked the contrast the in focus part of the ledge makes with the background of the trees and houses. I feel it is creative because of the graffiti combined with the skatepark, in the middle of a natural park. I edited the photo by using the lasso tool to go around the houses in the background and alter the colour of the sky with the curves tool. I then used the Hue/Saturation tool to make the background a blueish/grey so that it looks as though it was captured at night.

Tips From Chris Saunders

Chris Saunders advised me to pay greater attention to detail when taking photos, and notice the finer points in the photo. He told me to only put things in the foreground that add to the photo enough and give a different edge, or give more dimension to the photo.

Changes to a photo

I added 2 different images to a picture of Ventana House and warped them onto the side of the building to give it an urban effect. I first cut out and copied the pictures using the magnetic lasso tool. Then I warped them onto the building, then decreased the opacity so the building could be still seen through the new images.

Reflection of Bridge

Adobe Bridge has allowed me to give a star rating to photos. This allows me to pick and choose the best photos which are both technically good and fit for purpose. This will help me when I have to choose the best 10 photos that I have to take for my coursework.  It will give me the opportunity to label and give a star rating to the photos and remove and reject the ones that are not suitable or fit for the purpose of the objective.

Understanding of Cameras

Aperture- This is the amount of light that a camera lets through its lens. It is the size of the opening and can be adjusted. The larger the aperture, the more light is let in, so it is good for dark photos at night. It is measured in F/stops at measurements like this 1.4, 2, 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11 and 16.

Shutter Speed- The measurement to determine how long the shutter is open for when the picture is taken. The faster the speed, the shorter the exposure time. The shutter speed and aperture
time control how much light reaches the sensor.

ISO- The sensitivity of the image sensor. Setting the ISO level will tell the camera how much light is needed for a good image. The higher the ISO the less light required. Low ISOs are often needed in bright situations.

Lens- The part of the camera where light travels through to reach the sensor. The lens can allow you to decide how much of an image you can capture. Wide angle lenses are particularly good for scenic and wide landscapes. Portrait lenses are good for close ups of people as they minimise distortion.

Contingency plan

Equipment List

At Ventana House I have to be careful of cars when crossing the road. I also have to watch out for  other people on the pavement to avoid getting walked into. I also have to be careful when walking on the bridge so as not to fall off or fall down the stairs.
At the house skatepark, I have to be careful of cars as I will be in a car park. I also have to be careful of glass and rubble on the floor as it is quite a derelict area.
At devonshire green, I have to be careful of the soft ground on the park area as it could be a tripping hazard, sensible footwear has to be chosen. I also have to be careful of bikers on the skatepark, being aware of my surroundings is important.
At soundhouse I have to be careful of traffic when shooting from across the road as there is a nearby bus stop, so I have to be wary of that danger.
